Now that we’ve cleaned this vocal up a bit let's slap an auto tune onto your vocal and make sure that we’re in key.
This will help to lessen any harsh high pitch frequencies in the vocal. With R&B vocals I like to keep a lot of body as R&B vocals tend to be naturally high pitched as it is.
These bad frequencies can come from a few different factors including the recording environment, voice, and microphone.įor example: With R&B Vocals I tend to keep a lot of the low end VS a hardcore hip hop vocal. Each vocal will have different bad frequencies that need to be fixed so do not replicate the same EQ on every vocal that you mix. Keep in mind, this isn’t exactly something that you can apply to any vocal the same way. Next we’re going to throw on an EQ and fix this vocal up even more. If you record with high gain be sure to level the track accordingly. Moving forward the mix will be much easier to clean up with an EQ.įor the level I usually use Wave Candy and set a level meter at -20Db to make sure I have a well balanced vocal. Remember, the key to the perfect mix is making sure that you’re mixing the cleanest possible vocal from the beginning.
This specific vocal was recorded in an awesome recording environment so there wasn’t too much ground noise but it’s still vital to remove any of this as it may conflict with some of the other frequencies within the mix. This can be as simple as your headphones being too close to the mic as you recorded or your phone getting a text with the sound on causing a bit of background noise. This is going to help us remove background noise that may have been present in the vocal recording.
